Mission & History

Mission: Bayside Community Center empowers our diverse community to improve its quality of life through services, education, and advocacy.

Vision: To be a leader in meeting the needs of the community and a catalyst for change.

Values:  Collaboration, Compassion, Excellence, Inclusiveness, Integrity, Respect, Trust

Bayside's philosophy is unique--it's based on settlement house principles.

Founded in 1932, the Bayside Social Center was founded by the Sisters of Social Service in the tradition of the settlement house, a reformist movement that began in the 1880's.  These one-stop assistance centers were establiashed to meet the needs of lower income immigrants and native-born residents in urban settings.

Bayside History

Settlement houses were distinguised by a strong belief that the resources to empower newly arrived immigrants should come from local neighborhood leaders. The centers were a place of pride and belonging for multiple generations, with an underlying philosophy of upward mobility.

The diverse programs and services at Bayside today remain true to original settlement house principles and are rooted in promoting depply held American values......  Opportunity, independence and equality
