Congressional Representative Sara Jacobs Addresses Rising Anti-AAPI Hate Crimes with Bayside Community Center at Lunar New Year Event

SAN DIEGO, CA— Congressional representative of California’s 53rd District and third-generation San Diegan, Sara Jacobs, sent staff to address the continued rise of anti-Asian and Pacific Islander hate crimes in San Diego at Bayside Community Center’s Lunar New Year event on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

Despite broad support for the June 2, 2020 San Diego City Council resolution denouncing xenophobia and anti-Asian racism, hate crimes against Asian and Pacific Islanders in San Diego continue to rise since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic according to data from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

On Wednesday, February 2, 2022 Bayside Community Center hosted their 8th annual Lunar New Year event in celebration of some of the rich and beautiful cultures found in San Diego. Regarding the importance of this event, Bayside Board Treasurer and Linda Vista resident, Van Pham stated, “Resisting xenophobia and hate goes beyond passing resolutions and laws. It’s also about celebrating and supporting one another. That’s what Bayside has done for nine decades and that’s exactly what we’re going to do at this years Lunar New Year event.”

Regarding Bayside Community Center and their support for San Diego’s Asian and Pacific Islander population, Congress Woman Sara Jacobs stated, “I applaud Bayside Community Center for hosting such a vibrant Lunar New Year Celebration and for using this moment to raise awareness about the rise of anti-AAPI hate. This is a time for us to listen to our AAPI friends and neighbors, to uplift their stories, and to recognize that we cannot solve this problem if we don’t acknowledge it. San Diego’s diversity is our strength, and our AAPI community has always been a pillar of that strength. The Lunar New Year is an important celebration for so many San Diegans, and I am grateful that my office can participate in the festivities.”

Jawad Al Baghdadi, Senior Community Representative for California’s 53rd Congressional District attended the event in place of Congresswoman Jacobs. Al Baghdadi has served California’s 53rd congressional district since 2018, is a former refugee, was raised in the San Diego neighborhood of Linda Vista, and is a first-generation college graduate from San Diego State University.

Founded in 1932, Bayside Community Center is a 501c(3) non-profit with a mission is to empower its diverse community to improve its quality of life through services, education and advocacy.
